Organizing the thank you note process is like a military operation. It is much more difficult than wedding thank you's because we have to divide them up and not duplicate efforts. We are also trying to be inclusive on each note -- so that one note would cover attending the wake, flowers, donations vs. separate notes for each.
To do this we have to make a master list of names, alphabetize it (easy sort on spreadsheet), alphabetize cards, note on master list, print for each family member, highlight who does which, fill in gaps by dividing evenly. WOW. So far I've made the spreadsheet and started notations it for donations charities and flowers. Mom got tons of cards during the illness so we are covering those too.
I think the busy work in planning and thanking helps you block the pain by staying busy.
