My toad lily came up. I planted this two years ago and had given up hope. And then today I saw the spotted bloom and thought "Why the heck did someone name this toad lily? It is pretty!" That got me thinking about my spider wort plant that blooms so nicely on the side of the house. Why such ugly names for pretty plants? Hmm....Wonder Boy is not having a wonderful time with soccer this season. Two of his best buddies are doing football instead. This has made it hard for him in adjusting since he is shy. To make matters worse, he is acting cranky. He gets frustrated when team mates don't pass to him, but he has no interest in making friends and hanging out in the huddle with his team mates.
He apparently isn't so much of a team kind of guy. He wants people to like him, but doesn't seem to want to make the effort to be friendly with kids he doesn't already know. He doesn't get it that kids don't pass as much to the kid who isn't as friendly. Being introverted doesn't make you blend well on a team.
I hope he adjusts and learns the social side of being on a team. He is a smart kid, just not one to knock himself out to be social. We had a good chat after today's game. I told him of a time when I was left out of a group at work. Lecturing him isn't going to help. I did have to warn him about alienating his team mates...
Two of them made comments to him that made it clear they were frustrated with Wonder Boy's lack of enthusiasm. The kids like the team -- they are learning and won their first game today. Helping Wonder Boy get over shyness and get into making friends is going to be a challenge. Boys don't pass the ball to kids they don't like. Wonder Boy doesn't have a use for kids who are ball hogs... see where this is going? We are 3 games in with 5 to go. I pray we can help him see how his attitude effects his team and ability to make friends.
I hate it when my 9 year old makes my same mistakes over again. Hopefully telling him stories will help. I am trying to resist the urge to lecture and so is hubby. Ugh.

Your toad lily made me curious so I looked it up in one of my plant books. I hate to tell you this, but my book lists it as: hairy toad lily. Kind of adds to the ugliness of the name, doesn't it?!! Anyway, my book says the plant is a native to the cool, mountainous areas of Asia and its proper name is tricyrtis (not much of an improvement). It is also called hirta. Doesn't say a thing about why or how it came to be called a hairy toad lily.
By the way, it's a very pretty flower!
It is a lovely lily.
(PS. some kids never take advice. But, if you are like me, you'll keep on giving it until you are blue in the face !!)
