He has missed his beloved Tiger games, but he sounds like he is having the time of his life. He was so happy that I had such a great time at the game Friday night. He was thrilled that hubby and I stayed in the park until after it cleared out. We had stayed long after the game and just savored the moment. Previously he had asked if we'd stayed for the whole game -- hello! Duh! Like we would have left early. NOT! Silly man.
When we finally left the park we stayed out front by the HUGE tiger statue and took pictures. Fans were taking turns taking pictures of each other. There were no worries when you handed your camera to a stranger to take the photo -- we were all in a happy family together sharing the joy of an unlikely victory over the Yankees. We were all soaking up the atmosphere and reveling in the moment. The air was electric as the happiness danced into the night. We lingered a long time. Nobody likes to let such a happy moment end. To take stock in your happiness and the happiness of those around you -- it is just THE BEST!

From the moment we parked the car and started walking to Comerica Park we could feel the happy energy last Friday night. Hubby and I were there because my season ticket holder brother was in Ireland (on a long planned and much deserved vacation). I actually felt guilty that I was getting to experience this in his absence. People were just plain happy. Happy people waving and smiling at strangers. In the park we had conversations with strangers and it was like meeting up with old friends. Everyone was a friend that night.
We stood up and cheered more than we sat in our seats. We took pictures of the scoreboard and danced to the music. We cheered and enjoyed the awesome variety of humanity that came to the park to cheer on the Tigers. Two older gentlemen were in front of me. It warmed me on a cold night to see the youthful joy in both of their eyes as they stood and did a little dance of joy as the game ended. Nobody was a stranger. People stayed as the crowd thinned. They danced in the aisles and the workers joined in.
There was no car burning or violence after that game or after the series was won on Saturday night. My younger brother was there to soak up the joy on Saturday night. He got to watch as elated ball players celebrated with fans -- did you see them spray that crowd with the champagne? Did you see the state cop get it poured on his hat? We watched on TV with the kids. My little brother got to see it in person. I knew what that kind of crowd happiness felt like and I was THRILLED for him. Too bad national news media can't broadcast when good things happen in Detroit -- such a bad reputation for a city that has such GREAT people. I've been there for many events downtown and I wish this city got credit for the good things that happen here.
My older brother is enjoying Ireland and he is happy for us that we got to have these experiences. I hope the Tigers make it to the World Series! I would love for him to go to a game to experience the joy, to soak up the happiness, to be friends with the whole crowd. His last tiger game before the trip was the heartbreaker. After all these years of sticking with them, my older brother deserves a taste of what he gave us by giving us his tickets to the play offs. May simple joy over a sports team continue in this town. May my big brother come home to get a dose.
Baseball in October... Who knew?
GO TIGERS!

I've only been to one baseball game -- Seattle mariners. I dont' even remember who they played. I just remember Ichiro catching a fly in far right and throwing a guy out at home.
