Are all greyhounds stupid? I can not believe how clumsy my greyhound is!! He is in surgery right now after tearing open the webbing between his toes on his back foot. He somehow managed to tear this despite the removal of every conceivable hazard from our yard. He came in the other day and there was a little blood but we couldn't get a good look at the cause. We hoped for a minor thing that would not require vet involvement. Not so lucky.
We took him in today because he tore it worse after going outside yesterday. Now they have to put him under and do surgery to repair -- a few sutures, not anything major. The husband is not bringing home a check right now, so this REALLY sucks. The tax return was planned to pay the back bills from this month and to cover the May mortgage payment. We don't need additional financial strain at the moment.
This is the greyhound who previously had $2500 in surgery when he ran into the corner of the deck while chasing a squirrel. He tore open his entire side -- ripped his skin right back, had to have stitches that went in a huge line from the top of the back, under the belly, and back over the back. It was so gruesome he wore a t-shirt to shield the gore from view for about 6 weeks. He had drains left in for over a week and had to go back to the emergency vet the night of surgery because we couldn't manage his pain. He had a morphine patch and some sort of IV drip for pain as well.
Now he is in surgery again. It is minor surgery -- especially compared to what he has been through. I just have to wonder if all greyhound owners go through this. First it was the leg, then the tail, then the huge skin injury, now the foot injury. And they said Pugh were expensive.
The husband is now on the way home with the greyhound. Douley the greyhound is happy and did well in surgery. His foot is wrapped and I'm told he is dragging it a bit since the wrapping is awkward for him. Poor guy!
Poor Douley. He is dragging that hind foot. He could barely get up the front steps due to his post surgery drunkenness from the anesthesia. He has decided to hang out in his kennel -- a typical thing for him when he isn't feeling well. The husband had to help him up the stairs. It was sad. The bandages come off Monday and he goes back to get stitches out in two weeks. This poor dog!!
He is resting comfortably now. I'm so glad. He is a sweet and good dog. I just wish he'd stop getting hurt!
