I got behind the wheel of the car and knew what must be done. I knew today was the day. I drove in the opposite direction from our home. I told him that we had to make a stop. He nearly snarled at me. Then I told him,
"Wonder Boy -- look at the side of the road. Your favorite flower is in bloom."
He stared out the window and squeeled in delight. Oh yes, the Dance of the Dandylions! His miserable day melted away and he became giddy. I had promised him we would take his picture in a field of his precious dandylions this year. The day had come. The beauties were in bloom. The sun was shining. We went to THE FIELD. Cars passed us, but we did not hear them. We got out of the car and Wonder Boy ran forward into the field to enjoy the bright yellow gifts.
"Mom, how can anyone call them weeds?" he said.

I took his picture. I beamed at his joy. I shared in the splendor. I soaked up the moment. For some reason last year he started calling dandylions "macaroni." It was fun to say "Hey -- look at all that macaroni!" We enjoyed our dandy macaroni together.

That is damn cool. What an awesome son you have! And what a great thing to do for him, mom. :)
when I was little we would pick them and hold them under each others chins to see if there was a reflection -- and if there was (of course there was!!) the yellow meant you liked butter.
Why not hold one up to his chin to see if he likes Macaroni and Cheese???
So really, it's stop and smell the dandelions? :-)
BTW - email me at my gmail address so that I can send you a blog-invite!
I teared up reading this.
What a good momma you are, and what a lovely son to notice the beauty in those "weeds". Please don't tell him I said that.
Nothing better. :)

This post is so precious. He's ADOREABLE!
NOw whenever I see a Dandylion, I'll be thinking of you son.
OH! The last one!
What a great mom you are!
Do you know what my son and I did with the dandelions in the park today? Sang the infamous "Momma had a baby and the (flick off top of flower) head popped off!" and laughing. I think we might have made your son cry if he had seen us.
I love this post! That is so cute.
How wonderful!
How great of amother are you!
Carpe Diem!!!
And maybe someday he will acquire the love of dandelion wine... Never tried it... But in our neighbourhood... All the older men and women harvest the flowers for a taste of times gone by...
awwww. I love it!! Carpe Diem is right!!!
Happy Weekend, girl!
Just beautiful! Love the pics!
That is beautiful. The story and the picture. I totally agree with him too! Why are they weeds????? and we go and plant a different kind of yellow flower on purpose? those are delightful.

What a great post! You really made his day. Everyone should remember to stop and smell the flowers - even the weedy ones!!!
I am always following Karmyn...I am hear from Pamela's also.
This is a fantastic post. I know sometimes those after school moods are hard to break. This is just great!
How wonderful, and how wonderful of you to give him that beautiful moment! Building memories doesn't cost money - it's paid for with time and attention. I'm in awe of your care in preparing this gift for him. (I'm from Pamela's too)
Thanks for the lovely reminder to find the joy in every day... even it is in the soft blanket of dandylions.
Thank you again Pamela and everyone for your kind words. We had a great day that day -- it is so nice when you get a thought that helps you turn around your kid's day.
Wonder Boy is thrilled that so many people agree with him that the Dandy is not a weed! Thanks again for stopping in! I am humbled by the nomination and kind comments :-)
Hi I dropped in via Pamela; this is a beautiful post and your photo does make it look like a field of gold.
I would just add that my 3 tortoises would also be in heaven there as dandylion is their favourite food
Pamela was right. This *is* a perfect post.
And that made me cry. Here I am sitting at work, crying. Why? Well, my dad loved dandelions too. LOVED them. Felt the same way as your son: "How could anyone call them weeds?" And every time I see dandelions I think of my dad. He's been gone for nearly 4 years now.
Thank you so much for your post. I think my dad would have liked your boy.
