We are going to do something un-American. We are stepping into the abyss. In September, we are going to ....... turn off the TV. I know, you are shocked, but we are doing it. We are going to be a television free family. We are doing this as a matter of survival.Wonder Boy is 9 and is going into the 4th grade. Super Girl is 10 and is going into the 5th grade. They both play soccer. We are doing religious education in that "at home" program this year so I'll be teaching both kids vs. them going to CCD weekly. This will require me to attend a monthly meeting so that I can learn what I am doing. Hubby is taking a class on top of working and coaching 2 soccer teams.
He also has the task of trying to salvage what he can of the family business (they have not been working much, and could be going under soon). He is currently selling equipment and downsizing. It isn't fun, who knows how long this father /son business will limp along. The son (my wonderful hubby) can't leave the father hanging... so they limp along. Hopefully more work will come.
I am assisting hubby with both soccer teams, am taking 3 classes this fall, and will be spending a half day per week doing my pre-student teaching in a high school classroom. I will also be attempting a more regular physical therapy routine as my pain has gotten worse (not a huge shock when the weight is up and I'm not exercising). I see a sleep specialist next week as an addition to the doctor collection. Oh, I forgot to mention I have a full time job too...
When we decided to take on the soccer teams we debated where we could find more hours in our days. More hours for practice means shifting study time. Shifting parental study times means no more TV. It simply doesn't fit in our lives this semester.
I'm secretly excited. I got them ALL to sign off on the no TV plan last spring. I think we will be better people because of this. I know my kids are better behaved when there is less TV in their lives. I'm not a huge TV fan -- I tend to watch only after the kids go to bed. Taking TV out of my life might just help me get to bed earlier -- wouldn't that be a great idea? I think so! Wish us luck! I worry that hubby might go through withdrawal! I look forward to having music as the soundtrack to our lives instead of the periodic drone of the TV. Yippee for no TV! Will someone please save Greys Anatomy episodes for me? I only got the family to sign off for the semester...
Note: Current TV usage would only be about an hour a day for the kids and 9-11/12pm for me. Hubby on the other hand.....

i think that's AWESOME! good luck to you guys! we don't have a TV. it seems to always surprise people when we say that; they'll ask us if we've seen such and such a show, and we're like,'we don't have a tv.'. oh.
That's a great idea!! Good luck, and I'm sure it won't be all that hard with your busy, busy, busy schedule. I only have 1 in soccer and 1 in taekwondo--I don't know how you do it!
